GOVERNMENT ISLAND

A remarkable 17-acre historic park surrounded by Aquia Creek, with a 1.5-mile trail, elevated boardwalk through wetlands and woods, and the remains of a historic sandstone quarry.

Concierge Note:
This is one of our favorites for a little adventure with a lot of history. Aquia sandstone quarried here was used in the original construction of the U.S. Capitol and White House. The trail combines woods, wetlands, water views, wildlife, and fascinating remnants of the quarry.

ALUM SPRING PARK

A lovely wooded park tucked inside Fredericksburg, with walking trails, a footbridge, Hazel Run, sandstone features, picnic areas, restrooms, and a playground. The park's self-guided trail is about one mile and takes less than an hour.

A local favorite—and an easy one to recommend. The combination of woods, water, trails, and places to stop makes Alum Spring especially nice for families. Kids can explore and play while adults enjoy the quiet landscape.

MOTTS RUN RESERVOIR

A beautiful natural area surrounding a reservoir, with a network of hiking trails ranging from short, easy walks to longer routes through the woods.

Concierge Note:
Come for the trails, stay for the landscape. Motts Run is a great choice when you'd like to combine hiking with fishing, paddling, picnicking, or a visit to the Nature Center.

RAPPAHANNOCK RIVER HERITAGE TRAIL

Fredericksburg, VA

A 1.6-mile paved riverfront trail connecting with the Canal Path to create a scenic 3.4-mile loop, with views of the Rappahannock River, Old Mill Park, and historic mills. It is suitable for walkers and bike riders of all ages.

For an easy walk with beautiful river views, this is hard to beat. Bring a coffee, take your time, and enjoy Fredericksburg from the river's edge.
